White House Blocks Broadcom's Proposed Acquisition of Qualcomm, Citing National... xda-developers Mar 13, 2018 6:07 AM • by Mishaal Rahman White House Blocks Broadcom's Proposed Acquisition of Qualcomm, Citing National Security In a stunning announcement today, the Trump Administration has officially blocked Singapore-based Broadcom's proposed acquisition of rival U.S.-based Qualcomm. The takeover would have been the largest consolidation in the history of the industry. The proposed deal faced much scrutiny both within and outside of the industry, and with the White House announcement the deal is effectively dead. The proposed takeover of Qualcomm by the Purchaser is prohibited, and any substantially equivalent merger, acquisition, or takeover, whether effected directly or indirectly, is also prohibited. – White House Statement sent to Axios The full text of the White House statement can be viewed here. According to Axios, the underlying reason behind the move is because of 5G. Qualcomm is the leader in building 5G technology for U.S. telecommunications industry. The Trump Administration was concerned that Broadcom would put an end to Qualcomm's 5G efforts, paving the way for Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei to take over as the industry leader. There were fears that such an acquisition would lead to reduced innovation in the chipset industry. Cost-cutting measures might have been implemented, with implications such as the Code Aurora Forum potentially being shut down. Innovation in the chipset industry is key for not only smartphones, but for the technology powering the world of tomorrow. From autonomous vehicles to the Internet of Things, the devices of the future are powered by chipsets from companies like Qualcomm. The Honor 7C will be available in Red, Gold, Blue and Black color variants and is priced at 899 Yuan (approx $142) and 1299 Yuan (approx $205) respectively for the 3GB and 4GB RAM variants. The device will go for pre-orders from 13th March and will be available one in the Chinese market as of now and expected to be moving to other markets in the coming days. The device will be the successor of the Honor 6C that was launched last year and is also the same device that was spotted on TENNA a few days ago with the model number LND-AL30. Coming to the specifications of this handset, the Honor 7C will sport a 5.99-inch FullView touchscreen display with HD+ (1440 X 720 pixels) resolution. Under the hood, the device has a Snapdragon 450 SoC with eight cores coupled with Adreno 506 GPU and with 3GB or 4GB of RAM. The smartphone comes in 32GB as well as 64GB storage option which can be further extended with a dedicated microSD card slot. It also supports dual-SIM connectivity along with 4G LTE. On the rear, we can see a 13MP main camera with a 2MP secondary camera while on the front there is an 8MP camera sensor for selfies. It comes out of the box with Android 8.0 Oreo operating system out of the box with EMUI 8.0 on top.
