Apple Confirms its Acquisition of Shazam and its Music Identification Technology

After a few days of rumours surrounding Apple's possible acquisition of the British-founded Shazam, Apple has confirmed to BuzzFeed that it has acquired the firm and all of its assets. It is currently unknown just how much the firm cost, but it does not exceed $1 billion. A few days ago, TechCrunch put the figure somewhere around the $400 million mark.

This marks yet another music-related acquisition for Apple, after acquiring the Beats brand (in the form of Beats Music and Beats Electronics) back in 2014 for $3 billion and the TV show, Carpool Karaoke, last year. It is currently unknown what the company plans to do with Shazam, only telling BuzzFeed "we have exciting plans in store, and we look forward to combining with Shazam upon approval of today's agreement."

Shazam is one of the most popular applications in the world, and it has remained consistently in the top 10 downloaded applications on both the Android and iOS app stores since 2013. The application supplies users an easy to use music identifier so that when they're out and about and hear a song they like, they can simply use the application to identify what they're hearing. Shazam uses the device's microphone to record a snippet of the song and matche the song against an online database so that the user can later go home and listen to it. The application has over 1 billion downloads across all of the platforms it supports, which when combined with Apple Music, makes sense why Apple looked to acquire the company.

For us Android users, there may be a small cause for concern if you use the application. Back when Apple acquired Beats, they cancelled support of the Android application "Beats Music", later amalgamating the service into Apple Music. It's possible that they will make the application an Apple Music exclusive, so we'll have to wait and see what comes of the deal.
