YouTube TV is Finally Coming to Roku Devices Like the Roku 4, Roku Ultra, and Roku Express

Since the debut of YouTube TV back in April 2018, Google's live TV service has been met with mixed reviews. It's not available in every market, and it's a bit on the pricey side ($35). It's also not supported on a large number of devices, but this week, YouTube TV came to Roku set-top boxes and dongles.

Google previously announced that YouTube TV applications would be made available on Roku and Apple TV devices during the first quarter of 2018, following a delay that pushed back the launch from late 2017. It's met the new deadline for Roku support — the app doesn't work on all devices, but it supports most of the newer products in Roku's portfolio.

Here's a list of Roku devices that support the app:

  • All Roku TVs
  • Roku Ultra
  • Roku Streaming Stick+
  • Roku Streaming Stick (3800x, 3600x)
  • Roku Express/Express+ (3910x, 3900x, 3710x, 3700x)
  • Roku Premiere+
  • Roku Premiere
  • Roku 4
  • Roku 3 (4200x, 4230x)
  • Roku 2 (4210x)

YouTube TV, for those unaware, bundles television networks like ABC, Fox, CBS, ESPN, and FX into a $35-a-month package (not including premium add-ons such as Showtime). It boasts features like a cloud DVR, support for up to five simultaneous viewers, a live TV guide, and personalized show and movie recommendations.

At launch, if you wanted to use YouTube TV, you were stuck watching content in a web browser or on a smartphone or tablet. It took months for Google to launch an application for Android TV.

But Google's slowly begun to address the lack of platform support and other criticisms levied against YouTube TV. It expanded the service to 15 new markets in the first few months of its availability, for example, and to 34 additional areas in 2017. That brought the total number of markets where YouTube TV is available to 84.

The new YouTube TV app is available from the Roku Channel Store.
