Likely Honor 10 Camera Samples revealed with new Multi-Scene Detection

Hot off of the success of the Honor View 10, Honor is preparing to unveil its next flagship smartphone which is widely expected to be the Honor 10. The company recently sent out press invites for an event on April 19th (as shown in the feature image) where they are expected to announce this device. It will likely feature a 5.8″ screen with a display notch, the HiSilicon Kirin 970 system-on-chip, a camera configuration similar to the recently announced Huawei P20 (12MP primary +20MP monochrome), and a gradient color scheme according to a leaked image on Chinese microblogging site Weibo. Now, we are learning more information about the device's camera capabilities thanks to leaked information posted on our forums and new camera samples shared with us.

XDA Senior Member duraraa, best known for his FunkyHuawei.club service, has shared information about the camera features of an upcoming Honor flagship device which he believes to be the Honor 10. This information comes from a leaked document he has viewed and summarized on our forums. Given his track record with firmware leaks, we view this information to be fairly credible, although he has chosen not to share the documents with us so we cannot confirm their veracity. He has also shared photo samples that he alleges to be from the Honor 10, though we do not have any corroborating evidence to confirm the photos are actually from the device.

According to his source, Honor will be introducing a "semantic image segmentation mode" in their upcoming device. He states that, like some recent smartphones with scene detection, the upcoming Honor device will be capable of detecting "pets, snow, beach, and so on" but that the new camera technology will also be able to detect multiple scenes in the same image and apply different filters at the same time. FunkyHuawei goes on to say that this camera technology can detect the outlines of objects in an image (like the sky, plants, people, water) to identify their location and apply the right filter to each object. This is all supposedly done on-device, as opposed to Google's DeepLab-v3+, so the semantic image segmentation can take advantage of the NPU in the Kirin 970.

These are bold claims to be sure, so we'll have to wait and see what the device is truly capable of if this information ends up being true. Personally, I'm a big fan of the Google Pixel 2's Portrait Mode and HDR+ technology which makes taking beautiful photographs a snap. If other companies can create camera technology that simplifies the process of taking a great photo without requiring the user to fiddle with a lot of settings, then I'm all for it. Anyways, here is one set of camera samples that are alleged to be from the upcoming Honor flagship. We will likely need to see more photos from the device before we can decide if their camera tech can dethrone Google.
