How to Enable the Preferred WiFi Calling Option on the Verizon Pixel & Pixel XL

WiFi calling has become a popular feature on smartphones these days as they can offer an increase in call quality, especially when your signal is rather poor. Consider the fact that most cellular voice calls are sent using aging technologies which is why most standard phone calls don't sound as crisp and clear as VoIP clients like Skype. VoLTE technology has largely closed the call quality gap, but not all phones support VoLTE and not everyone has access to a plan or network with it.

Thanks to WiFi calling, we can take advantage of a strong WiFi network connection to place calls instead of relying on a poor cellular radio which can't penetrate to the inside of your office building or home. If your phone supports WiFi calling, such as the Google Pixel and Pixel XL, you might have found in option tucked away in the dialer settings to set calling to prefer using WiFi whenever possible. However, Verizon Wireless has disabled this toggle on the Pixel phones they sell to customers so you cannot enable it in the usual way.

Thankfully though, there is a way around it and we don't even need root access – all you have to do is send a simple ADB command.

Enabling WiFi Preferred for Wifi Calling

  1. Install the USB drivers for your device (Google has a list of some universal USB drivers here). This may not be necessary depending on your OS.
  2. Download the ADB binary for your particular OS (WindowsMacLinux). These links will download the latest version, so no need to scour the web!
  3. Extract the zip file into a folder that you can quickly access such as in the Downloads folder.
  4. On your phone, enter Settings and tap on "About Phone". Scroll down and find the Build Number then tap on it 7 times to enable Developer Options.
  5. Enter Developer Options and find USB Debugging, then enable it.
  6. Plug your phone into the computer and change it from the "charge only" mode to "file transfer (MTP)" mode. This is not always necessary but most phones don't allow you to use ADB in charge only mode.
  7. On your computer, browse to the directory where you extracted the ADB binary, such as in Downloads.
  8. Open a Command Prompt in the ADB folder. For Windows users, this can be easily done by holding Shift and Right-clicking and then selecting the "open command prompt here" option.
  9. Once you've opened the command prompt or terminal, enter the following command: adb devices
  10. If this is your first time running ADB, you will then see a prompt on your phone asking you to authorize a connection with the computer. Go ahead and grant it.
  11. Now try re-running the adb devices command and the terminal will print the serial number of your device. If it does, then you're ready to move on.
  12. Next enter the following command: adb shell
  13. Then finally execute the following command at the ADB shell prompt: settings put global wfc_ims_mode 2
wifi preferred pixel xl adb command
  14. There will NOT be a success message, but it should have taken effect. Read the following steps to verify this.
  15. Toggle Airplane Mode both on and then back off.
  16. Open the Settings application and go to the WiFi section.
  17. Look in the "More" section and you should see that WiFi Preferred is active. The change persists through reboots and through Airplane Mode toggles!

Explanation

As mentioned here, this is something that is included in the Android software for the Pixel and the Pixel XL, but the toggle has been disabled by Verizon Wireless. Wireless carriers get the final say as to what software features go on their smartphones (which is why so many are filled with bloatware). So like other wireless carriers (and even some OEM), they will choose to hide various software features that are included in the base software for that model.

But in some cases, it is still technically possible to enable this feature. In this, all we had to do is send an ADB command from step 13 of the guide above. By default this option is set to 1 which means disabled, and we're unable to toggle it on because it's grayed out. If we could toggle it on though, it would change this option to 2 (which again is what we manually did with that ADB shell command). So XDA Senior Member abuttino was able to find this option by executing a "settings list global" ADB command.

This and many other tutorials like this are based off of finding hidden settings commands that one can send through an ADB shell. Check out our tutorials feed on the XDA Portal for more posts like this.

How To Install Android 7.1.1 Nougat Firmware on Moto G4 Play Smartphone

Motorola just recently launched the new Moto G5 and the Moto G5 Plus smartphone. Both the devices offer great value for the money and are highly recommended. However, this also means that the old Moto G4 Play smartphone, etc. can be purchased at a much cheaper price. In fact, the Moto G4 Play is still a great smartphone. And if you are wondering about the software updates, then you don't really have to worry about it since the company is still trying to push the updates. They recently also pushed an update for the same.

However, if you still haven't received these new updates, then be sure to keep checking for new updates. But if you still haven't received it, then there is not a lot that you can, other than simply just flashing it manually. Well, if you are wondering how to do it, then you are in the right place. Today we will be showing how to do the same. Today we will show you how to Install Android 7.1.1 Nougat Firmware on Moto G4 Play Smartphone. But before that, let's take a look at some of the new features that it will bring to the table.

About the ROM

Below are some of the working features of the smartphone on this ROM –

  • Camera rear/front (Photographs)
  • Camera rear/front (Video – Use Camu from Play Store)
  • Auto brightness.
  • Fingerprint.
  • Bluetooth, Mic, Wi-Fi, GPS, IR
  • Hotspot
  • RIL

Now that it is out of the way, let's check out some of the requirements that are necessary for the installation. Below are some of the pre-requisite for the same –

Pre-requisite

  • The first thing which you need to make sure is that you are creating a complete backup of your files. Since we will be completely wiping the internal memory of the phone, you will end up loosing all your files.
  • You also need to make sure that you are installing a custom recovery software. You can install any of your choices; however, we suggest you go for TWRP for this installation.
  • You also need to make sure that the battery in the tablet has about 60-percent charge before you begin the installation. If your smartphone's battery dies during the installation, then you may end up with a completely bricked smartphone.
  • And lastly it is also necessary to make sure that you have downloaded the firmware file which is necessary for the installation. Without this file, you won't be able to proceed with the installation, and hence we suggest you download the same from the link given below.

  2. The first thing which you need to make sure is that you copy the downloaded file to the smartphone.
  3. Once done, simply turn off your phone and enter into the recovery mode. You can do this by pressing Volume Down + Power Key at the same time.
  4. After this, once you are in the recovery menu, look for wipe and format option ⇒ wipe data, system, cache and Dalvik cache and initiate it.
  5. Once done, now return to the recovery menu and tap on Install.
  6. Now it will ask you to browse for the firmware file which you had copied earlier. Simply navigate to the same and select it.
  7. After that simply swipe to begin the installation.
  8. Do make a note that the installation will take some time, and hence we suggest you be patient with the same.
  9. After it is done, before rebooting you can also choose to install the GApps.
