Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Appears in the Wild, Confirms 18:9 Display and Reduced Bezels

Xiaomi has been recently making waves with their Redmi line, which brings solid midrange devices at surprisingly low price points. Last year's Redmi Note 4 is living proof of that, even smashing multiple selling records since it came out. Nowadays, the phone is a very good deal, as you can grab a Redmi Note 4 for roughly $180 on retailers like Amazon and Gearbest. However, it's now due for a refresh as competitors adopt newer technologies on similarly priced phones. The Redmi Note 5 is due to be announced before the end of the year, and we've now received what are allegedly live images of the upcoming device.

The first live image of the device comes, as usual, from Chinese social network Weibo. It showcases the front of the phone and the new, headlining feature from it: it moves from the 5.5″ 16:9 display found on the Redmi Note 4 and Redmi Note 3 to a taller, 6″ 18:9, retaining the same 1080p resolution found in its predecessor.

The image also confirms that the device will retain the same Snapdragon 625 SoC found in other Xiaomi devices like the Redmi Note 4 and the Mi A1, and we also have a beefy 4000 mAh non-removable battery. The power-efficient Snapdragon 625 coupled with a big battery is the formula behind the critically acclaimed battery life of Motorola's Moto Z Play, and the combination worked very well for the Redmi Note 4 as well, so we should expect similar battery performance to come from the Redmi Note 5.

From the live image, we can also tell that the phone will come in a 64 GB configuration, with at least one 12 MP rear shooter, and Android 7.1.2 with the MIUI 9 skin on top. It's not clear when the phone will be announced, but we should expect its announcement before the end of the year or early 2018. The 18:9 display and killer battery life should make the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 a really compelling budget offer. But, it's still too early to tell, and we'll have to wait until the phone is out to see if Xiaomi can keep up its winning streak in the budget segment.
