Huawei Mate 10 Pro (Latin America) update adds ability to turn on the screen with Google Assistant

Google Assistant on Android can do a lot of things. It can give you weather alerts for the day, provide information about your daily commute, or even teach you multiplication tables. It can also unlock your phone through the trusted voice feature. Sadly, on Huawei/Honor devices like the Huawei Mate 10 Pro, it isn't possible to use trusted voice to unlock the phone's screen. That's because the default virtual assistant is Emy. The devices do technically support screen-off voice recognition, but only for the built-in proprietary voice detection service. A workaround was found by using Tasker, but now an update has arrived for the Huawei Mate 10 Pro in Latin America which allows you to turn on the screen with Google Assistant, no workarounds needed. The full changelog can be viewed below.

  • Adds a feature that lets you turn on your screen with Google Assistant. Adds badge notifications for missed calls and unread messages.
  • Integrates Google security patches released in February 2018 for improved system security.
  • Fixes an issue where paused music resumed playback when calls were answered with headphones inserted. Fixes an issue where some UI text was displayed incorrectly in HiCare and in the Alarm screen in Clock.

The update's build number is BLA-L29 8.0.0.132(C605) and should be available via OTA update in the coming weeks on your Latin America Huawei Mate 10 Pro. It's unknown if an update bringing the same functionality will be available on other other Mate 10 models, other Huawei devices, and Honor devices in the future as well. With this update, you can simply choose the virtual assistant you want to use in the device's settings, activate it by voice, and have your screen unlock. It's a useful feature and hopefully it will be ported to Huawei's other high-end offerings.

To get the update on the Latin American Huawei Mate 10 Pro you can simply install it when you receive the update notification. If you'd rather not wait, you can use the FunkyHuawei.club service which allows you to update, unbrick, or rebrand Huawei and Honor phones for a fee. Simply rebranding your device to a Latin American model will allow you to receive and install the update.
