Samsung's Foldable Smartphone Scheduled for a 2018 Release with Galaxy Note Branding

After a decade of innovation, we're getting to the point where technology just doesn't move as fast as it used to. Sure, the performance of CPUs, GPUs, RAM and other components are increasing, but not at the speed we have seen in the past. This has made some OEMs look elsewhere in their attempts to make their smartphones stand out from the competition. Samsung went with a premium design, LG tried the modular approach, but a few are looking into foldable smartphone technology.

We know that Samsung has been working on this for a couple of years now as they've shown off their foldable and rollable display technology at various conferences. A report back in January even pegged the company releasing one in Q3 of this year, but we can see that schedule was pushed back. Lenovo has been showing off their foldable smartphone and tablet concepts at the Lenovo Tech World events over the last couple of years as well.

A new rumor even says ZTE is working on a foldable device (even if they use a different technique) called the Axon Multy that is said to be released sometime in October. So after multiple reports, Samsung has officially come out and said they are indeed working to release a foldable smartphone sometime in 2018. At least, the 2018 time frame is their current schedule as they've said there are some issues that need to be fixed before the device can be made available to the public.

Still, they seem confident enough in this schedule to announce it, and as an interesting twist, they are also said to be releasing it under the Galaxy Note brand. Samsung has been known to experiment with new ideas using the Galaxy Note brand. If you remember, they first introduced their edge-to-edge displays to the world using the Galaxy Note Edge variant of the Galaxy Note 4. Given their history and development/manufacturing capabilities, it actually makes sense that they are planning to do it again with their foldable concept.
