Four new "Made in India" Samsung Galaxy J phones will launch this month

Samsung was the top smartphone vendor in India for years. This changed last year, as Xiaomi overtook Samsung in Q4 2017 to become India's top smartphone vendor. Xiaomi held on to its number one position in Q1 2018, with Samsung once again being placed in second position. An important factor for this change was Xiaomi's success in the budget and mid-range price segments, as well as the company's dominance of the online smartphone market in India.

This is where Samsung has failed to step up in the past. In the budget and lower mid-range price segments, Samsung's Galaxy smartphones haven't been competitive with Xiaomi's Redmi series in terms of specifications and the price-to-performance ratio. For example, the Galaxy On7 Prime turned out to be a re-brand of the Galaxy J7 Prime, which was launched back in 2016. The Galaxy J7 Duo was launched in India in April with dual cameras and a 5.5-inch HD (1280×720) display at a price tag of Rs. 16,990. The phone is more expensive than the Redmi Note 5 Pro, but its specifications are inferior in almost every single aspect.

Now, according to an IANS report, Samsung will launch four new smartphones in the Galaxy J series in May. In a first for the Galaxy J series, the phones will have Infinity Displays. Until now, the "Infinity Display" had only been a feature of the Galaxy S series (Galaxy S8/S8+, Galaxy Note 8, and Galaxy S9/S9+) and the Galaxy A series (Galaxy A8 2018 and Galaxy A8+ 2018). It means that displays with taller aspect ratios will now make their way to the budget and lower mid-range Galaxy J series.

The phones will be made in India at Samsung's facility in Noida. They will have features such as S Bike mode, Ultra Data Saving (UDS) mode, and 'Turbo Speed' technology. As of now, further details about the phones aren't known yet, but we expect to learn more about the phones at their launch.
