Xiaomi retains #1 spot in India thanks to the Redmi Note 5 and Redmi 5A

For years, Samsung led the Indian smartphone market as the company was the top smartphone vendor in the country. Local smartphone vendors such as Micromax tried but failed to overtake Samsung. Then, Xiaomi entered the Indian smartphone market in July 2014. In three years, the company overtook Samsung to become the largest smartphone vendor in India in Q4 2017.

Now, according to IDC's Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, Xiaomi retained its number one position in the Indian smartphone market in Q1 2018 with a substantial 30.3 percent market share. This widens the gap between itself and the number two smartphone brand. The company also continued its great performance in the online smartphone market as it gained 59.6 percent market share. The driving factors for this was the popularity of the Redmi Note 5 and the Redmi 5A, along with the company's efforts in expanding its offline presence.

Manu Kumar Jain, Vice President, Xiaomi and Managing Director, Xiaomi India stated: "All the success which Xiaomi enjoys today is proof of the love we have received from millions of our Mi Fans. We are thankful to each and every one of them for putting their faith in us and we promise to work hard to retain it. Xiaomi will strive to deliver on its philosophy towards providing high quality innovative technology at an honest price and bring the best of technology to everyone."

The company has also released a video to promote its number one position. The video gives viewers insights on the scale of its smartphone sales in India over the last three-and-a-half years. For example, if all Xiaomi phones sold were stacked together, it would run 25 times deeper than the depth of Mariana trench, which is the world's deepest trench at 10,994 meters and 35 times the height of Mount Everest at 8848 meters. The total weight of all of the company's phones sold measure 25 times more than the recorded weight of a blue whale.

Similarly, the charge from batteries of all Xiaomi phones sold could easily light up the Burj Khalifa for as long as five days, highlighting the fact that the company's phones generally have good battery life.
