Xiaomi is opening a dedicated smartphone camera department

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro has been declared as "India's camera beast" by Xiaomi themselves, yet the company has never really been known for its high-quality cameras. Historically, while Xiaomi certainly delivers on the price-to-performance front, they've had less success when it comes to their cameras. Typically cutting corners to keep costs down. That's not too bad given that these devices are generally good, but still for Xiaomi it appears that it's not good enough. According to a report from TechNode, they will be opening a dedicated smartphone camera department so that they can improve their mobile photography and become capable of taking on the more costly competition.

The news comes from a leaked email from the company's CEO, Lei Jun, to employees of the company. Zhu Dan, the director of electrical engineering at Xiaomi will be head of the department and will oversee its operations. "The company has decided to set up a separate camera department within the smartphone division," Lei wrote, "With the company's resources, we aim to build smartphone cameras capable of taking world-class quality photos!"

The company is already leaps and bounds ahead of where it was a year ago when it comes to their cameras, with the Mi Note 3 and Mi Mix 2S both receiving praise for their cameras. It's possible that they've been working on this for a while now, and if so, there's huge potential for improvement in this area. With competitors innovating and improving their cameras, Xiaomi may even feel a little bit threatened.

It's not the first time we've seen a company opening a dedicated department for a certain aspect of their device development, with LG opening a software update center recently as well. We've already seen the benefits of that, as multiple LG devices are now receiving updates. Maybe Xiaomi can manage to pull off a similar level of advancements in a similar length of time.
